Cooperation project "Mobilitätsbefragung Würzburg 2023" (MbWü 2023) to be continued

06/15/2024

As part of the cooperation project between the Chair of Methods of Quantitative Empirical Social Research and the City of Würzburg, a total of 2,944 households returned a completed questionnaire in spring 2023 (reported response rate: 38.6 %). Following the presentation of the initial results to the PUMA Committee (Planning-Environment-Mobility Committee) on 5 March 2024 and the current publication of the results report, the follow-up project is now starting, which will examine the citizens' data in even greater depth using a mixed-method design.

With the presentation of the results and the publication of the report on the "Mobilitätsbefragung Würzburg 2023" (MbWü 2023), the cooperation between JMU Würzburg and the City of Würzburg has been successfully concluded. In a follow-up project, more in-depth evaluations are now planned, also using a mixed-method design, in order to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the potential for sustainable transport behaviour.

On 5 March 2024, Prof. Dr Christiane Gross and Micha Pastuschka presented key data on mobility in Würzburg to the public and politicians as part of the PUMA Committee (Planning-Environment-Mobility Committee): For example, on an average working day, 87.6% of people in Würzburg are mobile - i.e. have travelled at least one way. Of these journeys, 24.3 % are made on foot, 17.7 % by bicycle, 37.1 % by motorised private transport (e.g. car, motorbike, etc.) and 20.9 % by public transport. The survey also focussed on information about the households and the people surveyed: A household in Würzburg has an average of 1.5 bicycles; 73.1 % of households have at least one car. In an open-ended survey, over 500 people formulated their own wishes and suggestions regarding mobility services in Würzburg.

The information is the result and initial findings of the collaboration between the Chair of Quantitative Empirical Social Research Methods and the City of Würzburg in the joint project " Mobilitätsbefragung Würzburg 2023" (MbWü 2023). A written survey of 8,000 households was conducted between May 2023 and July 2023. By the end of the field phase, a total of 2,944 households (including 6,372 people and 15,675 journeys) had completed and returned a questionnaire. This corresponds to an adjusted response rate of 38.6 %.

While the original objective of the cooperation has now been achieved with the publication of the results report, the successful cooperation will be continued in a follow-up project: Due to the high willingness of Würzburg's citizens to participate, a deeper insight into the mobility behaviour of those surveyed is possible. The in-depth evaluation of the collected data therefore began on 1 June 2024. In particular, the qualitative and quantitative responses are combined in a mixed-method design. The focus is on gaining insights into sustainable mobility behaviour. The first results are expected at the beginning of 2025.
