6 · Studying between Tradition and Modernity

IPS is located at Wittelsbacherplatz in Würzburg. A lively working environment will be awaiting you. The classical architecture of the main building fuses elegantly with the modern extension, which is home to the library, two state of the art auditoriums and the cafeteria with its scenic rooftop patio.

Historic Wing

The historic wing of the university building at Wittelsbacherplatz keeps the tradition of the University of Würzburg alive. The recently renovated seminar rooms provide excellent working conditions and are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as smart boards and beamers. Our institute takes special interest in keeping this working atmosphere framed in a historical and unique ambience alive.

Library and Lecture Halls of the Modern Wing

The new building opened only some years ago and contains the library and the lecture halls. The four-story library provides a comprehensive stock of books, journals and essays. Its great window facade allows natural light to enter the library during the day. Separated workrooms provide the option to retreat to a quiet, personal space for working without disturbances. We also provide sofas and armchairs to relax prior, after or between work sessions. The lecture halls are equipped with modern technology and, aside from beamers, smartboards and audio-visual technology, provide Internet via WLAN or LAN to every seat.

The Forum: Connecting Tradition and Modernity

The recently renovated forum in our university building at the Wittelsbacherplatz offers a perfect atmosphere for the various extracurricular events organised by the institute. No other room is as inseparably linked to the university’s tradition as this one, while at the same time connecting this tradition to the modern aspect. The former chapel invites the students to work on one of the workspaces and computer stations.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is situated on the fourth floor of the new building. It is the central gathering area of students at the Wittelsbacherplatz. When it comes to snacks, you will surely be satisfied with the offer in stock: fresh salads, French bread, sandwiches as well as pretzels, muffins and sweets. We also serve drinks, such as coffee and milk based beverages and of course cold beverages. In addition there are vendors for snacks, coffee and cold beverages. If students want to relax and enjoy the view over Wuerzburg’s roofs, the cafeteria’s deck allows them to do so.

Methods and Computer Labs

The methods laboratory at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology has 24 workstations, which can be equipped and used with the latest generation of notebooks as required. This is where you will focus on your methods training and learn how to evaluate statistical data using the latest statistical software. A large interactive display (84") and a stationary projector are also available. These modern didactic possibilities are complemented by magnetic wall panels on three sides of the room, which make it possible to create large-scale inscriptions or post notices (e.g. posters) on the walls during courses or workshops.

Most computer workspaces are located in the so-called CIP-pool at the Wittelsbacherplatz. Here, students may use our 80 high-performance PCs, 16 scanners and several professional printers – naturally, equipped with Internet access and comprehensive, up to date software features. The CIP-pool is located on the ground floor of the historic wing.
